USC - Dr. Cohen Gerontology Laboratory

Research

Los Angeles, California

Located in the basement of the Andrus Center Building at the Davis School of Gerontology, this project is a conversion of an existing 3,900 S.F. vivarium into laboratories and faculty research offices.

The new space includes specialized accessory uses of a confocal microscope room, an autoclave room, a -80 degree freezer storage room and a break room/lounge for graduate students.

Researcher’s study the basic physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, and molecular biology of mitochondrial-derived peptides (MDP’s), such as humanin. The focus is on trying to understand the clinical relevance of these phenomena, as well as the relation of these novel factors to cellular and organismal process including metabolism, carcinogenesis and aging and their role in diabetes, cancer and neuro-degeneration.
