USC - Olin Hall of Engineering
Los Angeles, California
Olin Hall of Engineering was constructed in 1963 and designed by prominent architect William Pereria. It is an historic building eligible for listing in the California Historical Register.
Lundstrom & Associates Architects provided programming and schematic design through construction phase services for this seismic upgrade of two, five-story towers, totaling 62,196 S.F. The central freestanding elevator / stair core is interconnected by way of concrete walkways and screened by precast concrete sunscreens.
The retrofit included adding exterior lateral shear wall elements behind portions of the sunscreens and thickening the existing shear tower ends, with minimal deferred maintenance. Additional services included: ADA, fire, life, and safety upgrades; telecom and data (power, pathways, & structural support); consultant coordination for structural, M.E.P., and civil engineers; and historical consulting.
